사회기반시설은 원만하고 효율적인 사회, 경제적 활동에 대단히 중요한 역할을 하고 있기 때문에, 지속적인 기능의 유지 및 안전성 확보가 요구된다. 미국의 경우, 현재 도로의 총연장이 약 600만km이며, 기설 교량은 56만개에 달하고 있지만, 이러한 교량의 약70%가 1935년 이전에 건설되었다. 재정상태의 악화에 기인한 유지관리의 소홀로 인한 도로 및 철도시설의 사고가 1980년대부터 다수 발생하기 시작하였고, 상당수의 교량에서는 내하력 부족의 문제가 발생하고 있는 실정이다. 이에 따라, 80년대 후반부터 점검 제도의 확립 및 LCC(Life Cycle Cost)를 고려한 설계가 시작되어, 지금도 이에 관한 연구가 활발히 진행되고 있다. 우리나라와 일본의 경우, 1960년대 또는 1970년대부터 교량건설이 본격화 되었고, 현재 이러한 교량들의 공용 연수 증가에 따른 내하력 감소와 장기노화에 기인한 손상이 예상되고 있다.
본 연구실에서는 공용기간의 증가에 따라 예상되는 사회기반시설의 내하력 감소에 대한 적절한 대책을 수립하여 장기공용 및 장수명화를 위하여 사회기반시설의 유지관리공학에 대해 연구하고 있다. 지금까지 주로 강구조물을 대상으로 한 연구를 진행하여 왔으며, 이를 콘크리트 구조물 등으로 사회기반시설 전반을 대상으로 한 유지관리공학으로 확대/발전시키고 있다.

   - 파괴역학을 이용한 피로수명추정
   - 구조적 응력집중을 이용한 강교의 피로수명평가

2. 사회기반시설의 부식 및 방식
   - 도장, 용사, 도금 등 방식법의 장기내구성 평가
   - 환경촉진실험을 이용한 구조재료 및 용접이음의 노화수명평가
   - 환경촉진실험법의 적용성 평가
   - 내후성강의 부식특성 및 적용성 검토

3. 강교의 유지관리
   - 강교의 내구성평가 및 내구성 향상법 개발
   - 해양구조물의 부식대책에 대한 검토
   - 장기공용에 따른 강교손상도 평가
   - LCC(Life Cycle Cost) 에 근거한 유지관리시스템 개발
   - LCCO2(Life Cycle CO2 emission)에 근거한 유지관리시스템 개발
